The city takes its name from its harbour: an inlet embracing the centre like a pair of antlers.
Brentesion
The ancient name Brentesion comes from Messapian and means stag’s head: the two branches of the inner harbour, like antlers, surround the city. Brindisi’s coat of arms still recalls this shape.
A port for Rome
In Roman times Brindisi was one of the key ports for the East. Its sheltered waters welcomed fleets, merchants and pilgrims bound for the Holy Land.
Today
The port combines passenger traffic, trade, Navy activity and leisure boating, and is part of the Southern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority.
