Commissioned by the emperor in the 13th century, it still watches over the western inlet.
Origins
The Castello di Terra was built by Frederick II of Swabia from 1227 to defend the port from which expeditions to the Holy Land departed.
Transformations
The Angevins and Aragonese enlarged it with new walls and towers. Over the centuries it served as fortress, prison and military seat.
Today
The castle hosts Italian Navy commands and on special occasions opens its halls and courtyards to visitors.
